1970 Press Photo Workers of West German Red Cross tracing missing soldiers

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Efforts of the West German Red Cross to trace missing soldiers from World War II generally result in painful news. But a definite death notice can often come as a relief from agonizing uncertainty. So far the missing soldiers bureau has traced over half a million, and there remain 1.2 million still missing. The Director of the Munich headquarters of the bureau, Max Heinrich (above), holds up a volume of photo records. The bureau has assembled nearly four million documents, sifted daily by patient researchers in the quest for information (below).

Photo is dated 1970.

Photo measures 8 x 11.25 inches.
