He was looking at my passport photograph. "'Why that's me,' I said. Customs Control examined the photograph through narrowed eyes and said something in Russian. "'What did he say?' I asked Nila. "Never mind,' Nila said. 'You wouldn't like.' "Customs control returned my passport and demanded to know whether I was carrying any gold, silver, jewelry or living relatives into the Soviet Union."
