Description
A childhood memory most firmly imprinted on Mr. Miller's mind is the reception he received from his mother when he returned home after runnng away and spending a night on a boat on Lake Pontchartrain. He returned home tired, hungry and repentant, expecting to be severely punished. Instead he was welcomed with love and without reproach. His boyhood ambition was to be a professional baseball pitcher. He was a good pitcher for three innings, after which his arm always gave out. He pitched what he called an in-drop, using an underhand motion that imposed a strain on his arm. Later he discovered he had been pitching a fade-away as thrown by the great Christy Mathewson, except that "Matty" pitched it overhand, with less arm strain. Warren Vernon Miller
