1963 Press Photo Miss Eleanor McMain, Southern Eye bank in New Orleans

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Pictured with a light coagulator are Miss Eleanor McMain (left), executive director of the Southern Eye bank in New Orleans, and Mrs. Orville Ewing, volunteer director. The light coagulator instrument is used in the treatment of selective cases of detaches retina, pigmented tumors, and corneal vascular disease. When a blind person is suddenly able to see again, it might be termed a miracle. But today, sight can result from the work of skillful doctors combined with the generosity of a person willing to donate his eyes at the time of death.

Photo is dated 1963.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
