1968 Press Photo William Hinphy, Legendary jockey of Useeit at the Fair Grounds

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Saturday's Racing at the Fair Grounds will be highlighted by the Black Gold Handicap honoring one of the all-time greats that raced in New Orleans. He will long be remembered by the racing fans for his brilliant performances in 1924 when he won five derbies. Among the veteran horsemen still campaigning at the Fair Grounds is William Hinphy who probably remembers more about the great little racer and his background than anyone here at this time. Hinphy rode the mother of Black Gold in races at the Fair Grounds. Her name was Useeit and that's a story in itself.

Photo is dated 1968.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
