"The story goes that Will, in his teens, saved a man from being trampled by a runaway horse. The man was a former Union officer and an official in the Reconstruction government."He was so grateful to Will that he offered him a post in the Customs House. But Will's mother wouldn't hear of his working with the damn Yankees.
