Ceremonies marked the dedication of Fire Engine Company No. 49 at 13400 Chef Menteur Highway Friday. The new station was built at a cost of $106,000. It will help protect the fast growing eastern part of New Orleans. - Mayor Victor H. Schiro said Friday that "New Orleans is in excellent financial condition now." The mayor, speaking at the dedication of Fire Engine Company 49 at 13400 Chef Menteur Highway said "It's the future we're worried about. This is the first time anyone has looked to the future to anticipate New Orleans' needs. In the past we have always waited until the crisis was upon us."
