1962 Press Photo W.D. Young Jr., general superintendent Jefferson Parish water

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
W.D. Young Jr., general superintendent of the Jefferson parish water department, compares a bottle of sandy water taken from a pipe in Westwego with a bottle of clear water to show how much more sediment is contained in the gritty water. Work has started at the Westwego water works to correct the condition. Repairs and rebuilding of the Westwego water plant are expected to end the high content of sand in water going to the Bridge City-Waggaman area of West Jefferson. James Coerver, chief of the water and waste disposal section of the state public health department's division of public health engineering, indicated that repairs to the six filters of the Westwego water plant should correct the condition in 30 to 60 days.

Photo is dated 1962.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
