Dr. Jonas Salk (right) and research associate Abel Prinzle at work in lab. infected to yield good harvest of virus. This requires a continuous costly supply of monkeys to donate the kidneys. But animal and human cells can be kept alive and growing artificially in test tubes, or tissue culture. Why not establish such a line of cells, using them as the source for growing polio viruses?
