Description
Man-eaters like this tiger shark have launched over 875 unprovoked attacks on humans since the early part of this century. About half these attacks have been fatal. Hans Fix was fishing in waist-deep water off Padre Island, Texas, when he suddenly felt a searing pain in his right leg. An ex-officer in the German Navy, Fix knew immediately what had happened. The Sunday outing with his family was about to turn into a life and death struggle. The 48-year-old cotton gin worker looked down and saw an eight-foot shark gliding away through water turning red with his blood. Fix knew the beast would be back. He yelled to his wife and five children on the beach and started toward them.

Photo is dated 1966.
