Most Versatile Thermometer - The tiny temperature sensor in the center of this picture can operate over an unprecedented range, extending from minus 325 degrees F (at which many gases liquefy) to plus 1200 degrees F "at which metals glow red hot). he heart of the sensor, dwarfed by a praying mantis, is a tiny man-made diamond, which is encased within the glass bead. As the temperature rises or falls, the diamond's electrical resistance decreases or increases in measured amounts.
