Description
A wildcat test, which set new records in the oil industry, has been plugged and abandoned by Shell Oil Company after no oil or gas shows were encountered. The test, near Leakesville, in Green County, Mississippi, is believed to have established three records: (1) with a total depth of 20,970 feet, it is the deepest well ever drilled east of the Mississippi River; (2) its nine-inch hole was drilled in 126 days, a national record for that depth; (3) 15,507 feet were logged through open holeE technique where no casing was used in the well, believed a world record. The wildcat, Barnes Number 1, was a joint venture between Shell and Placid Oil Company.

Photo is dated 1965.
