Description
Angry flames leap 150 feet into the sky Saturday as this oil well fire about two miles east of Abbeville, Louisiana, rages out of control for the sixth consecutive day. The fiery crater is about 80 feet in diameter, and a drill pipe which fell into the well hole Friday increased the fury of the frames. The drilling mud tank at the left of the flames is teetering near the brink of the crater, and engineers expect it to topple into the flames before the fire is extinguished. Engineers said Saturday they have no idea when the fire will be subdued. Damage is expected to total thousands of dollars.

Photo is dated 1961.
