Nicholas J. Roosevelt and his wife, Lydia Latrobe Roosevelt who made the first trip down the Mississippi river in a steamboat are shown with the historic boat in which they journeyed to the city. The vessel, named the Orleans, landed here 125 years ago today after a trip typically Rooseveltian in its spectacular overcoming of obstacles.
