Description
Natchez, Mississippi - City's past is juxtaposed with present. Connelly's Tavern, where U.S. flag was raised, is viewed from new post office. - Indeed, women of Natchez, all garden club members, sparked its revitalization in 1932. Today, the Pilgrimage flourishes, and garden club members still give tours of the city's restored antebellum houses, nearly all of which are family owned. But the tourist trade alone could not have pulled the city of Natchez up by the bootstraps. It was not until 1936, when the late Governor Hugh White offered the "Balance Agriculture with Industry" program, that Natchez embraced its real progress catalyst.

Photo is dated 1967.
