Contract has been awarded to Granite Construction Company of Houston for the Phoebe A. Hearst elementary school in Metairie on a tract just off Transcontinental drive, and the new Interstate 10 highway. Designed by Underwood Verges and Associates, Incorporated, the plant will be a cluster of six buildings, in campus plan, all connected by wide covered walks. In the buildings will be 30 classrooms all grouped around a central multi-purpose area. Rooms are divisible by folding partitions. Centrally located in the plan will separate buildings for a cafetorium, kitchen, stage and library and administrative areas. Classroom buildings will be centrally heated with provision for future cooling installations. Center of the plan is a large landscaped court complete with benches and gardens.
