1969 Press Photo Gulf Oil Personnel inspect the above-water wave force sensor

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Gulf Oil Personnel inspect the above-water wave force sensor (large vertical pipe attached to leg of platform), one of the many components of an Automatic Weather and Oceanographic Reporting Station mounted on a production platform in the Gulf of Mexico. The device furnishes information on wave force during violent weather as part of the program to expand man's knowledge of his environment. The cables descending into the water at the base of the platform leg lead to below-water wave force sensor which furnish information on wave behavior beneath the surface.

Photo is dated 1969.

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.
