Description
Smouldering City Dump one of smog contributors in Gentilly Area. Heavy, chocking smog which blanketed the eastern section of New Orleans early today, causing several multiple-car accidents on the Chef Menteur Highway, was blamed by city officials on smouldering straw bedding from the Fair Grounds racetrack which had been carted to the Gentilly dump. Sanitation Director John J. Cassreino St. said uncounted tons of the soiled bedding had been removed from stables at the racetrack since the race meeting opened last November, and was taken by a private disposal service to the dump.

Photo is dated 1963.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
