In New York, Secretary General U Thant addresses a press conference as he called for nuclear talks among the United States, Russia, Great Britain, France, and Communist China. The Secretary-General also said that deposed Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev should be permitted to "make a public statement on the circumstances of his exit." Behind Thant are United Nations undersecretaries (left to right) Dr. H. Tavares de Sa, C. Narasimhan, and I.H. Abdel-Rahman.
