Assembly of Ignitrons, Westinghouse devices that convert alternating current into direct current electricity, is shown here in three stages. Developed originally as electric power converters for street cars and railroads, Ignitrons today are aiding the production of the important defense metals, aluminum and magnesium, by supplying direct current for electro-chemical process.
