1958 Press Photo Jupiter IRBM Nose Cone Hoisted Into Position Aboard USS Escape

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
In The Atlantic: The huge, full scale re-entry nose cone of the Jupiter IRBM fired from Cape Canaveral, FL on 5/18, is hoisted into position aboard the USS Escape for lowering into the steel shipping container for shipment back to Huntsville, AL. The nose cone was recovered after a 1,500-mile flight through outer space. Preliminary evaluation of the cone indicated "complete success" of the protective covering the nose cone will give to a warhead.

Photo is dated 1958.

Photo measures 9 x 7 inches.
