Description
King Inspects The Home Fleet In Gale At Portland. Despite a strong gale and driving rain, King Edward, wearing the undress uniform of an Admiral of the Fleet, made his first inspection as sovereign of the Home Fleet at Portland. Owing to the gale part of his programme could not be carried out and acting on his suggestion the Commander-in-Chief cancelled the order that all ships should be "manned". The King, however, visited several ships and spent some time touring the men's quarters. Photo Shows The King making his inspection on the flight deck of the aircraft-carrier Courageous at Portland. Behind, left, is Sir Samuel Hoare, first Lord of the Admiralty.

Photo is dated 1936.

Photo measures 7 x 9.75 inches.
