1933 Press Photo Jim Gilhula breaking the world record in the 500 meter swim

Jime Gilhula, University of Southern California Freshman, recently broke the world record for the 500 meter swim held by Buster Crabbe. Crabbe's record for the 500 meter swim was 6 minutes 40.4 but Jim made it in 6 minutes 19.1 seconds. Jim also hung up a new national mark of 5.45.2 in the 500 yard distance.The old record being 5.47.6 establish 11 years ago by Johnny Weismuller.
