Description
(United States - Department of Agriculture) Office of Information. Colorado. Planes are shown spraying Melathion for grasshopper control on western rangeland. Vehicles on the road belong to the United States Department of Agriculture personnel keeping tabs on the spraying operation. Melathion is a non-persistent insecticide relatively harmless to humans, livestock and other warmblooded animals. United States Department of Agriculture does not undertake or cooperate in any programs until department scientists evaluate the environmental, biological, and economic impact of applying available pest control methods as opposed to not taking any action at all. This is one of the photos from Picture Story 256. Grasshoppers, showing how the United States Department of Agriculture, ranchers, and state agencies cooperate in grasshopper control programs to protect range grass and prevent population buildups that could lead to large-scale migrations into agricultural croplands.
