Trained as an economist, and employed as one, George R. Slater decided that actually wasn't what he wanted to be. So he found job as a vice president of a bank at Decatur, Illinois and from there moved to Harris Trust & Savings Bank, one of the largest ones in Chicago. At Harris he moved up to one of the top executive spots and in January he accepted the positions of president and chief executive officer of Marine National Exchange Bank of Milwaukee, third largest in Wisconsin.
