Swans Get A Welcome To The World: The State Department of Natural Resources and other agencies are working to re-establish the native trumpeter swan in Wisconsin. Eggs are collected from nests in Alaska, hatched at the Milwaukee County Zoo, and the young birds are then transferred to brooder cages at the General Electric Medical Systems headquarters in Pewaukee. At about 12 weeks of age, the cygnets are moved to a nearby pond on the GE site. When they are two years old, they will be released in the wild in northwestern Wisconsin. At least two pair of trumpeters successfully nested this summer at the Crex Meadows Wildlife Area near Grantsburg.
