1984 Press Photo Commission Row in Milwaukee's 3rd Ward - mjc11096

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Commission Row has been the cornerstone of the 3rd Ward's wholesale business since 1900. Milwaukee's old 3rd Ward sits quietly along the banks of the Milwaukee River, south of Downtown. The area's significance dates back to the city's earliest days, when fur traders and fishermen conducted business on Water St. The area eventually became the warehouse and wholesale food hub of the city. In 1892, most of the 3rd Ward was destroyed by fire. The area was rebuilt with a cohesive design and identity that has added to the district's distinctiveness.

Photo measures 10 x 7.5 inches. Photo is dated 4-6-1984.
