Description
Old Abe Goes Home -- Milwaukee County workers moved a statue of Abraham Lincoln back to its original home. Thursday on the Lincoln Memorial Bridge. The bronze statue will be rededicated at 1:30 p.m. Labor Day in front of the War Memorial Center. Schoolchildren raised hundreds of dollars in pennies to help pay for the statue's move, in an action meant to re-create the penny drive among schoolchildren that accounted for most of the $23,000 that was used to but the statue in 1934. The statue was moved from the old Lincoln Memorial Bridge in 1955, when the War Memorial Center was built. It was moved back to the bridge from a park at the foot of Wisconsin Avenue. --- (Statues - Milwaukee)
