Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Het Loo palace near Apeldoorn will be the first, temporary residence of Princes Margriet and her husband. Once a small, modest castle, it was bought by William III, king of England, in 1685 as a hunting lodge. He enlarged it to be a palace worthy of its owner. Other famed residents included William V and Louis Napoleon, brother of the French governor. Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands retired to Het Loo and there she wrote her memoirs. The palace is surrounded by ornamental lakes, gardens and parks. Pieter Van Vollenhoven
