1981 Press Photo Whipping waves buildings destroyed, Typhoon Nancy, Osaka, Japan

Typhoon Nancy lashed the industrial city of Osaka, Japan, whipping up floodwaters and sending waves crashing into buildings. On Monday, Nancy was blowing itself out in the north Pacific after cutting a swath of death and destruction across Japan. Left in Nancy's wake were 175 dead, 18 missing, 3186 injured and more than 600,000 homeless. Agricultural officials said crop damage was estimated at 130 million dollars. Property loss was set at 100 million dollars. Nancy's full force ripped through a string of cities on the south seacoast of Japan and through northern Honshu and Hokkaido. Niigata, north of Tokyo, was hardest hit with 33 dead. Disasters Storms Jr.
