Joseph Sorrentino underwent occupational therapy before his discharge from University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison. An astute medical student, a back to the wall decision to use a potentially lethal dose of an antifungal drug and the combined medical savvy of a team of physicians at a teaching hospital have succeeded in putting a Beloit plummer into the medical history books. Joseph Sorrentino, 58, who walked out of University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison last Friday, is now believed to be the first survivor of a widely disseminated blastomycosis, a fungus disorder. Only a dozen cases of the disease have been reported in the medical literature, and Sorrentino is the only survivor, according to his physician at University Hospital, Dennis Maki.
