Description
For that purpose the runaway slaves used them, led by an illshapen but highly capable warrior "Colonel" Cudjoe, in the 11 year Maroon War. Hiding in caves until the red coated British soldiers and recruits from the lowland plantations had filed by, Cudjoe's men would ambush them in ravines and shoot them down. British forces often would be forced to withdraw in disgrace without ever having seen their enemies though that had heard their voices. The British Governor, Trelawney, was so weary of this by 1738 that he sent in a flag of truce and signed a treaty with Cudjoe giving all Maroons complete freedom to rule themselves and granting them several thousand acres of land on promise to quit raiding plantations. The further agreed to pay the Maroons, in turn, promise to aid the white men in case of rebellion or invasion, a pledged which they have kept even in modern times though the British in 1914 couldn't get them to enlist to fight the Germans until the mysteries and dangers of a zeppelin raid were explained. The Maroons had figured that they could hide behind trees and shoot any Germans who came down the Jamaican forest paths. Cane Mill at Accompany, capital of Maroon country Jamaica
