1957 Press Photo Canada thistle is meanest weed in the garden - mjb86465

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Canada thistle is probably the meanest weed in the garden. Its countless prickles make all contact with it annoying, if not downright painful. It spreads by means of underground rhizomes, so that a whole colony of the plants can get established seemingly in no time. Once chopped down, it is almost sure to pop up again. Unlike its cousin, the bull thistle, it does not produce flowers of any great beauty. A curiosity of Canada thistle is that flowers are dioecious-male on one plant or colony of plants, and female on another. LS Garden
