1969 Press Photo 17th street ramp backed with traffic for experiment, Milwaukee

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Motor vehicles lined up on the 17th st. on-ramp to the East-West freeway Monday, the first day of a two week traffic control experiment which it is hoped will alleviate rush hour congestion. Sheriff's deputies were on hand to guide motorists as they entered the freeway. The trial system uses a series of three lights to limit the number of vehicles entering the westbound lanes at 17th and 28th sts. and Hawley rd. The first light a motorist encounters advises him of traffic conditions- light, moderate or heavy flow. A second warns him to be prepared to stop at the base of the ramp. The third, a stop and go light, controls his entry to the highway. The lights will operate from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. weekdays through out the test period. Freeways- Milwaukee
