1963 Press Photo Goodyear Aircraft Corporation Facility in Akron, Ohio

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
A half million dollar facility has been completed at Akron, Ohio, by Goodyear Aircraft Corporation to wind fiberglass filaments into missile motor cases. The cases are built up by winding resin impregnated filaments around a rubber liner, much like thread on a spool. A rigid mandrel supports the rubber liner during winding. The structure (right) revolves slowly while glass filament is fed from the white arm, which rotates around the wheel (center). After winding, the case is cured in an oven, fusing the unit into a lightweight, high strength case.

Photo is dated 1963.

Photo measures 8 x 10 inches.
