1982 Press Photo United States Flag and United Nations Flag fly in Wauwatosa

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Despite a protest, the flag of the United Nations was flown Sunday, United Nations Day, outside the Wauwatosa City Hall, 7725 West North Avenue. Carolyn Rice, president of Wisconsin Women for Constitutional Government, recently urged Wauwatosa officials to refrain from flying the flag. She said the United Nations promoted a godless, single government that would control the world. Rice said such a goal was contrary to United States principles. A City Council committee placed Rice's request on file and permitted the raising of the flag. Wauwatosa residents voted in favor of flying the flag in 1976, when a similar protest resulted in a referendum.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 10-24-1982.
