Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Breaking Ground for the new museum: Dr. William Lamers, president of the Museum Board of Trustees, leans into his shovel at a ground breaking ceremony at the site of the new museum Thursday while others, including Mayor Maier (right), lean on theirs. The good natured, informal ceremony on N. 8th Street, between W. Wells Street and W. Kilbourn Avenue, marked the beginning of construction of modern, new museum building. Other "shovelers" at the ceremony included Frederick L. Ott (left), president of the Friends of the Museum Incorporation, and Dr. Stephan Borhegyi, museum director.

Photo is dated 1950.

Photo measures 7.5 x 9 inches.
