1940 Press Photo Elwood High school Entrance Where Wendell Willkie Made Speech

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Under the inscription "The Hope of Our Country," on the Elwood (Ind.) high school entrance, Wendell L. Willkie will stand and make his formal speech accepting the Republican nomination for president. He played under that same inscription when he was a boy and it is possible he may, in his less carefree moments, have looked up at the legend and thought of himself as "the hope of our country."

Photo is dated 1940.

Photo measures 6.5 x 7.5 inches.
