Despite its highs and lows, the circus continues to make money and enchant children and adults. In order to encourage vocations for children in the circus, an international contest for artists less than 21 years of age is organized each year in France. The 3 Louis Merlin scholarships, given to benefit traveling circuses, were give to the winners of the competition at the end of a gala held under the Gruss circus tent in a Paris garden like the old days.
Picture: 14 year old Barry Lapy from Britain, presents his juggling number on a unicycle which earned him a spot in Monaco's next circus. A nice career is in the works for this artist who has participated in the Circus World Championships held in London each year and already has a spot in the largest Australian circus next year.
