Sail Tankers For Energy-Saving Age: Some Japanese shipbuilders and shipowners are interested in reviving. sail cargo ships and tankers as another "energy-saving scheme" Last May, commissioned by the Japan Marine Machinery Development Association, Nippon Kokan. K.K. conducted sea trials of the 83gt "Daigo" with three sails, al/15 reduced scale model of a 450,000-dwtclass tanker it had built at its Tsu Shipyard. The "Daigo". measuring 26.3 meters in overall length and 4.6 meter s in breadth, is equiped with a diesel engine capable of propelling the vessel at 15 knots. During recent sea trials, the model tanker made 15 knots mainly propelled by the engine, and the engine output was adjusted in coordination with use of the sails to obtain data on fuel economy, thesuitable type of sails and on how to use them effectively.
