The Swiss people came to the rescue of the survivors when they gathered them together too weak to resist capture. They tended and fed them and then packed them in boxes, transported them by trains to Southern Switzerland on the other side of the Alps. in the Ticino, which has a Mediterranean like climate. Photo Shows The rescued swallows are released from the boxes in Bellinzona, in the Ticino, South of the Alps, where the climate is much warmer for their survival.
