75th Birthday of composer Werner Egk: On May 17th 1976, the German composer and conductor Werner Egk will become 75 years old. Born in Auchesheim(Bavraria), he studied at the conservatories of Augsburg and Frankfurt and was a pupil of Carl Orff in Munich. From 1936 to 1940 Werner Egk was conductor at the State Opera in Berlin, from 1950 to 1952 director of the conservatory in Berlin and from 1950 to 1971 further president of the German Composer Association and the German Musical Council. Werner Egk is considered one of the few composers of modern music, whose works became popular on a large scale. His most important works: operas "Die Zaubergeige" (The magic violin), ''Peer Gynt'', ''Columbus'', ''Irishche Legende" (Irish Legend(, ''Der Revisor''(The Revisor), ''Die Verlobung in San Domingo'' (The engagement in San Domingo), ''Siebzehn Tage undvier Minutan'' (Seventeen days and four minutes); the ballets ''Joan von Zarissa'', ''Abraxas'', ''Die chinesische Nachtigall'' (The Chinese Nightingale); as well as orchestra and concert works. Werner Egk's latest compostion, ''Nachgefuhl'' (Afterfeeling), will be played for the first time on September 30th this year in Munich.
