1982 Press Photo Tenneco-Oil, Gas Production Platform off the Louisiana Coast

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
From rig to reef...an oil and gas drilling production platform, which operated for 16 years off the Louisiana coast, has been given to Florida by Tenneco Oil Exploration and Production as an artificial reef, to improve fishing. The 300-ton platform, shown below still drilling, had its 130-foot leg section removed before being barged to a site 175 feet deep near Pensacola. Tenneco decided not to scrap the structure after studies indicated the steel skeletons nurture marine life.

Photo is dated 1982.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
