Description
The shutdown of Amarillo Air Force Base (AFB), scheduled to be phased out by July 1968, will deprive the city of an $80 million slice of its annual economic base. This includes some $41 million in military payrolls and about $24 million in civilian pay. The base, originated in World War II and closed after the war, was reactivated in 1951.
