Description
The shutdown of Amarillo Air Force Base (AFB), scheduled to be phased out by July 1968, will deprive the city of an $80 million slice of its annual economic base. This includes some $41 million in military payrolls and about $24 million in civilian pay. The base, originated in World War II and closed after the war, was reactivated in 1951. Military personnel and their dependents at the base total about 14,000. (Photo shows Wing Headquarters Building at Amarillo Technical Training Center.) Texas.
