John Paul Jones' American Marines on Bon Homme Richard, 1779. On May 13, 1779 John Adams saw "Jones' Marines, dressed in the English uniform, red and white *** instead of green," which was "variant from the uniforms established by Congress." Photograph of a painting by H. C. McBarron, Jr. The story of these Marines is told by Major E. N. McClennan in his history of the Marine Corps, Volumes One and Two, and in his "Uniforms of the American Marines." US Marine Corps Uniforms.
