1957 Press Photo Massachusetts politician James Michael Curley and wife

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Now 82, veteran politician James Michael Curley stages the most remarkable comeback of his colorful career by surviving a fall that fractured both of his shoulders and caused a severe internal hemorrhage. A silver-voiced orator with a fondness for literary quotations, Curley recuperates by discussing his latest readings with his wife. The former congressman, Boston mayor, and Massachusetts governor barely got beyond grammar school in formal education but cultivated a love for the classics while commuting between Boston and Washington during his first term in Congress. He still averages at least two hours of reading a day.

Photo is dated 1957.

Photo measures 7 x 9.5 inches.
