Poignant memories of war-torn Manila for opera singer and General. Jasmine (Mrs. Ben) Egan and General William C. Chase. Exporter Jack Fleming was one of 4000 grateful Americans liberated from the infamous Santo Tomas concentration camp in Manila on a Saturday night, February 3, 1945. The rough and ready First Cavalry armored division that did the job was commanded by Houston's own doughty General William C. Chase.
