Description
Caption: (NY21-March 25) Cutaway View of Explorer X--Diagrammed drawing illustrates the makeup of Explorer X, the 78 pound satellite hurled into a highly elliptical orbit today atop a Thor-Delta rocket. The launching form Cape Canaveral, Fla., was designed as a deep space probe to study mysterious magnetic fields and the intensity of solar winds. The heart of the payload is one and one-half pound rubidium vapor magnetometer, the most sensitive device yet flown to study magnetic fields.
