1941 Press Photo Hemlocks Porcupine Mountains hardwoods

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Caption: THE PRIMEVAL hemlocks in the forest of Porcupine Mountains tower over Carl and Grieta Van Coevering, converting them into little brownies at the foot of giant trunks. This is the largest single area of uncut hardwoods left in the United States. Now lumbermen are moving in on the trees, and the beautiful forest is endangered. Other wooded areas lost that battle decades ago.
