Caption: The General Salutes -- Maj. Gen. Melvin J. Maas, blind veteran of the U.S.Marine Corps, gives his wife a kiss while their daughter -- 1st Lt. Patricia Maas of the Marines -- looks on at the end of ceremonies yesterday marking the retirement of the general. General Maas was advanced to major general, retired, as he stepped from active service. He stood at attention while troops at the Marine Barracks paraded and remarked :" I never saw the boys look so good." He became totally blind last year.
